After that, you’ll probably walk around the ship or head to the resort deck which you’ll need to bring a bathing suit and beach coverup. In the past few years, I’ve been on 8+ cruises, and each time I’ve perfected all the outfits you’d need to pack for your cruise. It’s also wise to consider the weather and cultural norms of the port destinations. If you’re visiting conservative countries or religious sites, it’s important to dress modestly and respectfully. Bring along a light scarf or a cover-up to easily adapt your outfit when needed.
When packing, it is essential to consider the cruise line’s dress code. This will be the starting point on what to plan for the evening wear. Cruise ships have had formal nights for a very long time, and cruises only recently became less formal. Here at Southern Tide, we create premium Southern clothing that lets you live in the moment and create feel-good lasting memories wherever the tide takes you.

They are great to wear on the first day of a cruise, matching with your travel party, or as a gift for someone heading on a cruise. On boarding day of a cruise, you are guaranteed to see groups of friend and families wearing matching cruise shirts. If I’m being honest, these shirts tend to be a bit tacky, but are a great way to kick-off a group cruise. But if you still want to wear a formal evening gown, it’s welcome. I find a lot of Caribbean shore excursions involve lots of water activities like swimming & snorkeling, or boat excursions.
Walking Shoes or Trainers
Popular theme nights are wide-ranging, though the most recurring are tropical parties (Hawaiian shirts encouraged), '80s nights and white nights (all-white attire). Cunard features black-tie galas on its sailings that are often themed (think Roaring '20s and Masquerade Ball). P&O Cruises typically has signature black-tie evenings, and many smaller luxury lines (including Silversea, Seabourn and Regent) will host black-tie evenings throughout extended sailings. Like I previously mentioned, after lounging at the pool deck, I like to get dressed up in a nice sundress to have a sunset cocktail before dinner. I usually head straight to dinner in the same dress and never had any problems.
“Boho” or “boho-chic” is a vertical similar to Bohemian style, but with a more subdued twist. Unlike the vivid color palette that a Bohemian look offers, a Boho-chic outfit relies on natural earth toned fabrics while still keeping with the fashion style’s classic flowy aesthetic. Add a suede sandal or tan purse to really pull your ensemble together. My mission is to inspire and help you plan your future Tasty Itinerary with our cruise and travel tips and guides. That is because even if the swimming pools aren’t heated (although many are heated on Alaskan cruises) , there are still lots of hot tubs for you to enjoy.
Dinner Jacket or Suit
Hawaiian shirts are very popular on hot weather cruises, not just on a Hawaiian cruise. Shirts both long and short sleeve will commonly be seen in the restuarants on cruise ships. However if you are traveling to a location where you plan to snorkel and do water sports it is good to have as extra protection from the sun. Even if you are traveling to a cold weather destination, such as going on a Baltic or an Alaskan cruise we recommend taking swimwear with you. However we always recommend packing a top layer for on the cruise ship where the air conditioning can be very strong.
If you don’t bring one, just replace with a short-sleeve collared shirt and a blazer. Beyond the suggested attire we’ve covered, some cruises have specific dress code rules. As we wrap up our guide on cruise clothes, let’s touch upon a few general packing tips to make your cruise vacation as seamless and enjoyable as possible. Dressing up in the evening isn’t just about adhering to the cruise’s dress code; it’s an experience in itself. It’s the thrill of preparing for a night of enchantment, the anticipation of gourmet meals, and the promise of unforgettable memories. Cruise trips aren’t solely about sipping cocktails having fun cruise experiences on the deck or basking in the sun.
Sunglasses and sun hats
Pack dress shoes or even dressy sneakers to complete your men’s cruise outfits for chic or elegant evening nights on the cruise. Opt for breathable cotton jeans and wrinkle-resistant chinos for cruise ship evenings. Jeans are versatile for multiple wear, while chinos can be dressed up or down—pair them with a button-down and blazer for a chic night. If you have 2 or more formal nights we recommend packing just one jacket and trousers and using different button-down shirts and ties to style them differently. Royal Caribbean and other cruise lines will outline the attire for dinner each night in your cruise compass. For a typical 7-night cruise, there are typically two formal nights and five casual nights.
Cocktail dresses, evening gowns, tuxedos, or suits are appropriate for these occasions. It’s a chance to showcase more elegant and sophisticated attire while enjoying a special evening onboard. On port days you will likely be taking excursions, so you will want to be comfortable in the heat, wear good walking shoes, and protect yourself from the sun.
Selecting the right cruise ship clothes transforms your daytime experiences into comfortable, memorable adventures. Whether lounging poolside or exploring exotic locales, understanding what to wear on a cruise during the day is essential to enjoy every moment. Some cruise lines have a ‘smart' dress code between casual and formal.
When packing for a cruise, formal night is often what brings people the most stress. If formal night does not sound appealing to you, you can easily avoid the main dining room on these nights. A good, comfortable pair of sandals can be worn to the pool and port. Finally, don’t forget sunglasses and a hat to protect yourself from the intense Caribbean sun. Here is a great example of a casual dinner outfit that doesn’t involve a dress. A pair of nice dark pants and a dressy top and flats will do the job for casual nights.
A pair of well-fitted shorts or pants, coupled with a breathable shirt or a polo, is a practical and stylish choice. Don’t forget to wear comfortable walking shoes to protect your feet during long walks or hikes. Caribbean and other warm weather cruises (Mexico, Bahamas, Bermuda) call for casual cruise wear during the day. When planning what to wear on a cruise, pack bathing suits for sea days and beach shore excursions, and shorts and t-shirts.
T-shirts, shorts, sundresses, and sneakers are perfect options for exploring, lounging, and participating in onboard activities. However, a lot of cruises are dropping the mandatory “formal” night where you had to dress to the nines in black tie attire. Instead, you’ll find smart casual, or evening chic dress codes in place for dinner. While pool and deck wear tend to be more casual, it’s still important to be mindful of the dress code and respect the guidelines set by the cruise line. Some cruise lines may have specific rules regarding appropriate swimwear and require the use of cover-ups when moving through indoor areas.

Or they can choose a wedding in a port of call, like Mexico, either onboard the ship or at a venue like the beach of a resort. If you don't like being the center of attention, then a cruise wedding may not be for you. Everyone on board and in port is going to ooh and aah at you as you sashay by in your wedding finery. This type of ceremony is also not ideal for couples who want to invite hundreds of guests or want the flexibility to select the perfect caterer, photographer, cake, florist or musicians. For example, as of July, Royal Caribbean is fully sold-out for 2022 weddings and is not accepting bookings for additional nuptials this year.
Ilene and Carl had each been on dozens of cruises when they met on a cruise. It felt natural to choose to get married on yet another cruise ship. Watch out for a la carte charges that can add up on Royal Caribbean. For instance, couples who want to plan a wedding less than 90 days from sailing pay a fee that varies based on the package chosen. Note, too, that wedding parties of more than 50 guests require an additional wedding coordinator for an additional fee. Beyond that, an additional surcharge applies to weddings and vow renewals scheduled in May, June, September and October.
There may also be surcharges for weddings held during busy peak season or holiday travel periods. Not only can your ceremony be conducted at sea by your Princess ship's captain, but the line also features state-of-the-art technology that allows you to broadcast the ceremony live, via webcam, to friends and family on land. On one particular cruise over Valentine's Day, the captain casually announced he'd conduct vow renewals for anyone who wanted them, and about a half-dozen couples showed up.
Name a popular cruise line and chances are you can get married on one of its ships. Beyond total guest numbers, each cruise line has strict rules about how many non-sailing guests can attend your embarkation-day wedding. For example, Royal Caribbean allows a maximum of 75 wedding guests (out of 150 total) to be day visitors who come for the shipboard ceremony and then leave before the ship sets sail. One of the first decisions couples need to make is whether to schedule their nuptials for embarkation day, at sea or in a port of call. Just complete this form and one of our expert wedding consultants will be in touchto help you start planning your special day.
The decision to officiate a cruise wedding onboard or in port is a personal decision, but there are a few logistical differences between the two options. Packages typically employ the cruise line’s preferred vendors, so keep in mind that it might be difficult or impossible to handpick florists or photographers. Each port has their own requirements to obtain a marriage license, which couples are responsible for handling.
A Vows at Sea package starts at $3,850 includes up to 50 guests and use of a private onboard wedding venue while the ship is at sea. The Embark on Romance option, from $5,600, lets the couple get married onboard the ship while it's in port on embarkation day, allowing non-sailing guests to participate in the ceremony before the ship departs. This package includes the same services above and covers up to 50 people, but adds priority check-in and a pier-to-ship escort for the couple and their guests.
The kids will love racing down the tallest slide at sea, Ultimate Abyss — it’s 10 stories high, and a total rush. Teens can get their adrenaline pumping on the surf simulator and zip lining.
